Almost every stalled deal I have ever looked at had the same root cause and it was almost never the pricing conversation. The champion left. Or got promoted into a job that no longer touches your product. Or lost the budget mandate in a reorg. Or just quietly stopped answering, which is its own kind of leaving.

One person cannot buy your product. They can champion it. They can want it. They cannot, alone, sign the paper, defend it in a room you are not in, and survive a reorg that happens six weeks before close. That is a coverage problem, and coverage is a skill.

This week: the four ways your champion disappears, the multi-threading motion that actually works across BDR, AE, and CS, the one language pattern that expands the room without threatening the person you already have, and a stat that will change how you look at your forecast on Friday.

The Deal Was Definitely Closing. Then Taylor Got a New Job.

Forty percent of deals stall because the primary contact leaves, changes roles, loses the mandate, or quietly disengages. Taylor is one version of four. The stage-by-stage multi-threading plays across the full funnel, the exact language that expands the room without threatening the champion, and the coaching motion that makes it stick.

Close The Gap. The Only Qualification That Holds Up On A Cold Call.

The multi-thread only holds if the qualification underneath it does. GAP forces you to hold two numbers in your head at once: current state and desired state. Sell the distance between them. Same doctrine that lets you expand a room without sounding like you are going around your champion.

Run This Monday

Three moves to earn coverage this week. In this order.

Pick your five biggest deals. Run these three moves on each one before Friday. The ones that fight the moves are the ones already in trouble.

  1. 01

    1. Name the four ways your champion could disappear. Out loud. In the deal review.

Departure. Internal promotion. Loss of mandate. Quiet disengagement. If the rep cannot tell you which one is most likely on the deal in front of you, the coverage plan does not exist yet. Building it is the meeting.

  2. 02

    2. Ask the champion for the room, not around the room.

The line: "To make this easier for you internally, who else usually weighs in on a decision like this? I would rather bring them in early than surprise them at the end." That sentence expands the room without going around the person you already have. Steal it.

  3. 03

    3. Grade the gap, not the vibe. Current state, desired state, impact of the distance.

In every deal review this week, force the rep to name each buyer's current state, desired state, and the business impact of the gap in the buyer's own words. If any of the three is missing, the deal is not qualified. It is optimistic. Different thing.

Buyers change jobs every year in B2B SaaS. Which means the champion you closed in Q1 is roughly a coin flip to still be in the seat by Q4. Single-threaded pipeline is not a pipeline. It is a countdown.

One Bad Joke

🕸

My rep said the deal was single-threaded but the champion was very committed. I asked what happens if the champion gets promoted.

He said that would never happen because they were too valuable to lose. Reader, they were promoted the following Tuesday.
